Blame Yourself, Not Your Dog! by Tin Lay
The age-old saying goes like this – the dog is a man’s best friend. Needless to say, a majority of the world population still believes in this phrase, as many families and individuals alike keep at least one canine at home. Dogs can be the source of happiness for any individual. From the smallest smirks and playful antics, to the happiest welcome greeting, they can put a smile on any face under any weather.
But like children, loveable K9s tend to misbehave every once in a while. They can chew on things like furniture and stuffed animals, break a few porcelain figurines and vases, chase a few cats in the neighborhood, bark loudly at random things, and maybe cause a few dirty accidents around the house.
Whenever these accidents happen, don’t be too harsh on your beloved dog. Never ever blame your furry friend whenever he does bad. Come to think of it, dogs do not inherently know the difference between a tree and a piece of wooden furniture. For them, they’re just both pieces of wood. Don’t expect them to be as clever as humans – they’re dogs!
Fun and games aside, every person knows that every dog can pose a serious threat to humans – especially to little children. While dogs can be very faithful and clingy to their owners, this same protective instinct can be the source of danger. Dogs can be very aggressive against other dogs, animals, and human strangers who they perceive as a threat to their territory, to themselves, or to their owner.
Every dog, big or small, is armed with powerful jaws and sharp teeth. Though fatalities are rare, dog bites can still cause significant damage to people. Dogs are also armed with claws that can lacerate flesh and can cause grave infections too. Moreover, dogs can also transmit rabies through dog bites.
Whenever a dog misbehaves, it is not solely the animal’s fault – it is the pet owner’s fault too.
How can that happen? Primarily, dog misbehavior is a result of improper Dog Training. While a dog could have the animal instinct of wreaking havoc, remember that dogs also have the instinct to be faithful to the leader of the pack. In order to prevent accidents and dangerous encounters with canines, it all depends on effective dog training.
It is the pet owner’s utter responsibility to control your pet dog, and not the other way around.
Like the famous dog whisperer Cesar Millan would suggest, treat your dog as a dog, and not as a young human being. It’s great to treat your dog as family, but never as a human. It’s very important to assert who the master is, who the leader of the pack is. It is best to train dogs while they are still puppies, so they can learn faster, and they are not as strong as they will be when they grow up.
Dog training can be very difficult, and your only key to success is of course, patience.
